My two celebrities are Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. I follow both of these people on Instagram and Twitter. Selena Gomez is the most followed person on all of Instagram with about 69.5 million followers. Justin Bieber comes in 6th place with 61.6 million, and he is the most followed male. Justin Bieber uses his social media to promote his music and albums, while also posting pictures of himself. Videos of him singing as a normal kid were discovered on YouTube and how he has a sold out world tour. Selena does the same, she is into modeling and music but also reaches out to her fans to show that she appreciates them. Selena started her career as a Disney Channel actress and now is a huge part of the music industry.
I have observed the social media presence of these two artists for the past few days. Both of these artists are very influential towards their fans while also promoting themselves. First of all, both artists are very active on YouTube. Justin started his career by posting videos of him singing as a young, ordinary boy, and now both artists have multi-million views on music videos, concert videos and videos of interviews. Justin has been using both Twitter and Instagram to promote his new album Purpose and also his Purpose tour. He tweets links to his album to get fans to purchase it and also tweets hashtags for each different city that he goes to to try to get the tour trending. Not only does Justin promote himself, but he also tweets about people less fortunate than him, for example he tweeted to spread awareness about getting kids clean water. Justin’s Instagram page is much more personal than his twitter page. He posts many pictures of himself, pictures of him with friends and girlfriends, and pictures of him partying.
Selena uses Twitter to communicate with her fans more than Justin does. Although she also tweets links to her album to get fans to purchase it, she uses Twitter less promotionally than Justin. Selena tweets updates about what she is doing and progress she is making with her tour. She also responds to her fan’s tweets and thanks them when they compliment her music. She also tweets live videos of her that are funny and show her doing ordinary activities that make her seem more relatable to her fans. Selena is the most followed person on Instagram. She posts a lot of modeling pictures of herself, fun videos, and pictures of her with family. Her Instagram is a model for young girls who look up to her and want to post similar pictures.
In the essay “Imagined Social Relationships”, the relationship between consumers and celebrities is discussed. This relationship is often imaginary, social media allows celebrities to connect with their fans in a way that can feel very similar to real friendship. Selena and Justin both serve as both emotional outlets and role models for their fans. They have a lot of pressure to post things that will please their fans. They are also used as motivation for body images, fitness inspiration, and style inspiration. This week, Justin Bieber decided to cancel all of the meet and greets at his concerts which cost his fans $2000. He used social media to communicate his reasoning for this with his fans and to apologize to them. Selena uses her twitter to reply to a few lucky fans who tweet compliments at her. By replying to just one fan, it makes her seem more relatable to the rest of them and it makes her seem much more down to earth. Social media allows fans to feel closer to the celebrities because they are getting updates of their daily lives. These interactions can boost celebrities up in the eyes of their fans.
Love u guys.. I'm going to be canceling my meet and greets. I enjoy meeting such incredible people but I end up feeling so drained and filled with so much of other people's spiritual energy that I end up so drained and unhappy.. Want to make people smile and happy but not at my expense and I always leave feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted to the point of depression .. The pressure of meeting people's expectations of what I'm supposed to be is so much for me to handle and a lot on my shoulders. Never want to disappoint but I feel I would rather give you guys the show and my albums as promised. Can't tell you how sorry I am, and wish it wasn't so hard on me.. And I want to stay in the healthy mindset I'm in to give you the best show you have ever seen 😉
